If you are looking for a project in the summertime, something to do with the kids at home, or just something to spruce up your eclectic green space, one thing you might want to look out for while at garage sales is old teapots. You can repurpose them into unique pots for your indoor green space. Not only do you repurpose a unique pot, you save money since ceramic pots can be pretty pricey; plus ceramic pots don’t have quite the character or personality as some chipped teapots you can find at garage sales for a more affordable price. Also, it feels great repurposing something for good and keeping it out of the landfill while being creative.
1. Find a teapot that you like at a garage sale. Make sure it does not have a filtering screen on it for tea leaves. Try not to pay more than 5$ for it.
2. Add some rocks to the bottom of the teapot for drainage.
3. Add soil to the teapot as well as the teapot spout. As a tip, it is easier doing this with moist or damp soil, so you don't need to add soil after.
4. Make sure the handle is out of the way and on the proper side you want it to be on after you plant your plant of choice.
5. Leave some room in the teapot for the transplanted plant to fit nicely into, don't overfill the teapot with soil.
6. Transplant your medicinal plant, or a plant of your choice into the large part of the pot.
7. Transplant a small plant into the spout part of the teapot. Its good to use small spider plant sprouts as I did in the photos.
8. Keep watered and enjoy your new decorative pot and houseplant addition you got on a budget.
I recommend planting tea type herbs in your teapots for fun; things like Chamomile, etc. I planted Aloe for this demonstration, but I had one with Chamomile for awhile before I decided to try again with another plant after my Chamomile died. As a fair warning, due to the small reservoir of water, they may require more care and frequent watering.
UPDATE: My Chamomile died, so did my Aloe. I found using Spearmint or other mint varieties offer more resilience. Good luck and have fun!
